Effortless Elegance Rooted in Tradition
The “Odú Boubou Gown” celebrates timeless beauty and cultural significance, drawing inspiration from the beloved boubou (or baati) silhouette that resonates deeply across the African diaspora. Known for its graceful ease, this gown is as comfortable as it is captivating—a favorite among pregnant women for its spaciousness, yet easily cinched at the waist with inner ties for a tailored, flattering fit. Our design is also breastfeeding-friendly, making it a versatile choice for mothers throughout all stages of motherhood.
Inspired by the Creator-Goddess
This piece was designed as an homage to Odù, The Great Mother Àjẹ́, a name that evokes visions of creator-goddesses and divine feminine power. Its expansive form serves as a reminder of the fractal nature of the universe and our interconnectedness with the Creator herself. The gown’s lightweight fabric moves fluidly with the body, trailing gracefully like a cape or train and capturing a sense of regal movement with every step.
A Story of Color and Craftsmanship
Hand-dyed in a rich, vibrant purple from logwood—the heartwood of Haematoxylum campechianum—this hue has held significance since the 16th century. Sourced from regions like Mexico, Central America, Madagascar, and India, the logwood tree embodies a history of color treasured across generations.
Adire-Inspired Artistry
The gown features an adire-inspired batik design, painted by hand to blend traditional artistry with modern living. This intricate patterning lends a layer of texture and soul to the gown, making it not only a garment but a wearable work of art.

Delicate Fabric Blend Care + Natural Dye Tips
- Washing: Hand wash in cool water with a pH-neutral detergent specifically safe for silk blends. Avoid general detergents, which can weaken silk fibers over time.
- Detergent: Choose a mild liquid soap (pH-neutral) such as Eucalan or Tru Earth.
- Drying: Lay flat to dry or hang on a padded hanger away from direct sunlight to protect the dyes and fabric structure.
- Ironing: Cool iron on the reverse side or place a pressing cloth over the garment. Avoid high heat, which may damage both the silk fibers and dyes.
Important Tips for the Cotton-Silk Blend
- Avoid Soaking and Wringing: Do not soak or wring, as this can weaken the fibers.
- Acid Exposure: Protect from contact with acidic liquids or cleaners, which can strip the color.
Stain Care:
- For stains, create a lukewarm water bath with a small amount of pH-neutral soap. Let the garment soak for 3–5 minutes, then rinse as usual.
- Hot water sieve technique: For stubborn stains, stretch fabric over a sink with another person’s help, and pour hot water through the stain. Be cautious not to scald yourself!
General Tips for All Naturally Dyed Garments
- Sunlight Protection: Long exposure to direct sunlight may fade natural dyes. Line dry in the shade and store in a dark place.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Steer clear of bleach, stain removers, and acidic cleaners.
- Stain Removal: Handle any stains gently. Spot cleaning may lift color in an uneven way, so the best approach is a quick rinse in lukewarm, soapy water.
